Stuck at Amelia Island: A Racing Legend & More at the Concours

The 21st annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance just wrapped up in Florida with enough precious metal on show to rival Pebble Beach.

A 1952 Pegaso Z-102 Cupula Coupe and a 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Town Car won the Best In Show honors, but they were far from being the only things worth ogling. Of particular interest to DQ were the “Cars of Hans Stuck”, dedicated to the double Le Mans 24 Hour winner and 1985 World Sports Car Champion. Among his 19 legendary rides on hand was the 1977 Alfa Romeo-powered Brabham BT 45B flown to the Concours by the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo in Arese and the 1987 24 Hours of Le Mans winning Porsche 962, direct from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart.

32,000 people in all came to take a look at the event, which drew 320 cars and motorcycles into 43 classes from 10 different countries. Additional highlights on the field included a Porsche 356C 1600 SC that once belonged to Janis Joplin; the 1914 French Grand Prix-winning Mercedes GP car; and the Ferrari 166MM of Luigi Chinetti and Lord Selsdon. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Lamborghini Miura, a selection of six Miura’s were on display, enough in themselves to induce a lifetime of envy in any true student of the supercar arts. McLaren also brought by the 1968 M8A Can-Am car, raced by Bruce McLaren, Denny Hulme, and Dan Gurney, as well as a modern day million-dollar P1 in Papaya Spark. Sizzler….
