The annual Goodwood Revival in the UK is an incomparable coming together of amazing cars and great vintage style.
It’s also a damned fine opportunity to acquire a plethora of gent’s essentials at esteemed auction house Bonhams’ annual sale held in conjunction with the event. Of course some truly incredible cars are set to cross the auction block this weekend, but one shouldn’t overlook all the other obsession-able items on offer as well.
On the automotive front it’s pretty hard to put one over on the 1970 Porsche 908/03, one of the most renowned of all World Championship endurance racing Porsche sport-prototypes. One of the legendary Gulf-JW Automotive racing team’s quasi-works entries for the 1970 Targa Florio and Nürburgring 1,000Km races, it was later sold and converted by Porsche into a 908/03 Turbo for the 1975 Martini Racing program, finishing 3rd at Mugello, Italy, co-driven by Gijs van Lennep/Herbert Müller, and once again raced in the Nürburgring 1,000kms before winning the Mainz-Finthen InterSerie race. Fitted with a 660bhp twin-turbo 2146cc flat-6 cylinder engine, it’s expected to bring in around $3.8 million.
|Not looking to drop seven figures? You’d do well to raise a hand during bidding on a killer c.1970 Heuer Carrera Dato chronograph, Ref. 2547, with a 17-jewel Valjoux Cal.723 manual wind movement. The most complicated model in the Carrera series, on its original steel bracelet, it’s a steal at about $9,000. And don’t overlook the smashing selection of vintage picnic cases from the golden age of motoring, including this one made by G.W. Scott & Sons in 1913, lined in dark blue leather and containing all the essentials for a gentlemanly outing. Strap it to the Bentley, old boy, and set course for Goodwood….|
