Too Cool In Pebble Beach

Too Cool In Pebble Beach

Words by: JARED PAUL STERN

Of all the eye-catching concept cars that we saw in Pebble Beach

and there were plenty it was really no contest when it came to choosing the coolest. BMW had it all sewn up from the start when it whisked the cover off its drop-dead 3.0 CSL Hommage R at the Bavarian marques private villa. Designed in tribute to the legendary 1975 BMW 3.0 CSL that debuted the year BMW of North America was founded, and which went on to score astounding racing victories almost from day one, the 3.0 CSL Hommage R is a masterstroke from BMWs brilliant head of design, Karim Habib. Decked out in the marques iconic red, white and blue racing livery evoking the original 3.0 CSL it blends futuristic design with just the right amount of retro appeal.

And though BMW werent offering drives of the Hommage R just yet, the original 3.0 CSL was on hand to show its still got what it takes. Dapper BMW of North America President and CEO, Ludwig Willisch, who made a dramatic entrance at the BMW villa unveiling at the wheel of the 1975 BMW 3.0 CSL No. 25, also signed on to race the car at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca, swapping his bespoke navy blazer for a custom racing suit. The next day it was announced that BMW will be the featured marque at next years Rolex event, in honor of BMWs 100th anniversary. With that on the books all of Pebble Beach is set to be a Bimmer blowout in 2016, and we couldnt be more chuffed. Three cheers to the boys from Bavaria.
