The Bentley boys have done it again with the introduction of Bentayga,
the worlds most powerful and exclusive SUV, at the Frankfurt Motorshow. But one detail in particular caught our eye: the 187 mph vehicles smashing Mulliner Tourbillon Clock by Breitling, which brings haute horlogerie to the dashboard (also the champagne case in the boot inst bad). Created by Bentleys bespoke division, the Mulliner Tourbillon is merely an indication of what the storied British marque can do; customers placing an order for Bentayga can also have the clock customized to their exact specifications. The most striking feature of the Mulliner Tourbillon by Breitling are the diamond indices adorning the dial in either natural or black ebony mother of pearl. The clocks case is machined from solid 18 carat gold and is available in either rose gold or white gold with a knurled bezel. The counterweight at the back of the mechanism has been hollowed and softly backlit.
Equipped with a 60-second automatic flying tourbillon with a frequency of 4 Hz, the Mulliner Tourbillon by Breitling beats 28,800 times an hour in a titanium cage. Accurate and lightweight, it is only 4 mm wide and has a 50 hour power reserve. The Tourbillon showcases a rapid-rotation double-barrel in series and a variable inertia balance, enhanced by a gold oscillating weight with bridges beveled by hand using a traditional piercer (touret). While a traditional Tourbillon clock requires a natural movement of the wrist to wind the mechanism, the Mulliner Tourbillon has what Breitling calls the most exclusive winder in the world. A precision machined and ground helical gear drive system powered by a highly accurate and efficient stepper motor enables 1080 counter clockwise rotations per day, at a speed of 15 rotations per minute.
The advanced winder mechanism meets Breitling's exacting requirements of operating at precise 15 minute intervals over a 24 hour period and also offers the following features: demo button – A single press rotates the tourbillon three revolutions at 15 rotations per minute; time adjust – A hold of the button for 3 seconds will rotate the clock 45 degrees, offering the crown wheel for adjustment. Pressing the button after adjustment will reset the clocks position; position reset – If the clock is knocked out of position after 3 seconds it will reset to its datum. This is constantly monitored. As a finishing touch, Mulliner has elegantly matched the light shining onto the reflector bowl of the Tourbillon and the illuminated halo on the demo button to the vehicle mood lighting and dimming features. Now who's game for some serious off-roading?
