Quinn + Tonik Vol. 93: Labors of Love Report

Quinn + Tonik Vol. 93: Labors of Love Report

HAPPY LABOR DAY.
Apparently we're not supposed to wear white hereafter. But no one seems to be able to explain why.

When asked by our buddy Danny Agnew at Inside Hook, "What do you think of the 'no white pants after Labor Day' rule? For it? Against it? Thoughts in general?" DQ's response was:

"Personally I'll be on a beach in white after Labor Day. Hopefully several times before the next one comes around...I rarely worry about other people's arbitrary style rules."

After all, life is for living. Not worrying too much about petty rules. Dressing with purpose and a goal is a whole different story altogether of course. For as we are wont to say in our own words,

"Men judge generally more by the eye than by the hand, for everyone can see and few can feel. Every one sees what you appear to be, few really know what you are."

- Machiavelli

So, with that, head to the bottom, grab a glass and make that cocktail, and sit back and build your fantasy wardrobe. We'll then be more than obliged to make fantasy become reality. We're in the dream business, after all.

fall essentials: from kit to caboodle

We all need the right tools to get through life. So here are some suggestions for the perfect set of kit.

stripes

We've always loved stripes. And still do. And always will.
Apparently the winds of fashion are changing once again. So for those who want to be a wolf in sheep's clothing, stripes will be the way to go this fall.

tweeds

It's always time for tweed when fall comes around. Whether a classic Scots number constructed for running through the heather with hunting dogs and Purdeys, or a cashmere version for that backgammon game at the club. We're happy to help with either...but let's not get one confused with the other!

worsteds

Our favourite cloths for any wardrobe. A mixture of elegant and classic English worsted herringbones, birdseyes and Prince of Wales checks perfect for any occasion.

mohairs

When Savile Row met Rock 'N Roll this was our cloth of choice. It still is. From Jack Carter to James Bond there simply is no edgier choice.

overcoat overkill

If you have been holding off on that once-in-a-lifetime overcoat purchase we are ready when you are with everything from a beautifully classic English worsted herringbone, to an awe inspiring Alpaca.

join our club: get our ring

If you are lucky, you get what you pay for. Fortunately, there are smart ways to take luck out of the equation. In the dark ages when con-men were slipping coins and fabricating fake items from dubious minerals, the Crown of England decided that enough was enough. And rules were implemented requiring all items made of precious metals to be assayed to confirm their composition. Assay offices were created. And hallmarks designated to be stamped onto each item confirming where it had been tested, what it was made of, and where and when it was tested. Our solid 22ct gold signet ring is marked DQ with a 916 indicating 91.6 grams of pure gold per 100 grams, an anchor for the assay office where it was tested, and a U for the year, 2019. Needless to say there is a smoking skull on the inside as well. Just for good measure.

read: hillbilly elegy

It seemed appropriate on labor day to read a modern day classic about the modern US labor force, meritocracy, and the legacy of your place of birth. A story of hillbillies, cultural mores, migration, manufacturing, and life.

This modern day classic shines a light on the real USA beyond the bright lights and big cities. In a world where a plane ticket seems like a dream, and escaping the holler as likely as intergalactic space travel.

Just fantastic.

cocktail: an old fashioned

Nicolas Palazzi will probably kill us. As will the cult followers of his simply ridiculously good Mic Drop Bourbon. PM Spirits just released their new 4yr old edition. If the previous ones are anything to go by, it will (a) be fantastic, (b) sell out almost immediately, and (c) fetch multiples on the secondary market. It's Pappy van Winkle from the mind of a French cynic. You can get some from our pals at MWC if you send them a message... tell them we sent you.

Meanwhile, let's have a drink to celebrate our labors this year...

INGREDIENTS

1⁄2 tsp Sugar
3 dashes Angostura bitters
1 tsp Water
2 oz Mic Drop Bourbon

DIRECTIONS
Add the sugar, bitters and water into a rocks glass, and stir until sugar is nearly dissolved.
Fill the glass with large ice cubes, add the bourbon, and gently stir to combine the flavors.
Express the oil of an orange peel over the glass, then drop in.

We like to think that the right outfit transports you to another place. And we've noted before that it does actually make a difference. But even if you have your Edwardian cuffs cut right like our friend in the photo, and your waistcoat with lapel in place, you may need more giddy-up than just a fine wool mohair blend [...]
