Hopefully you've all pulled through this year's vintage of the greatest celebration in the USA. What we in the old country would have called
Harvest Festival.
With all this abundance in mind, and knowing that we all have much to be thankful for, it led us to pondering global issues. And the needs of the many, rather than the abundance of the few.
So have a read of the tomes below if you fancy something with a little more substance. Both are hardly light reading, and yet are easy to read and digest (no pun intended.)
Once you have read them, and digested them, you may even be entitled to the last word.
So, read from the bottom up, mix that cocktail, and enjoy.

read: the end of faith

"Imagine that we could revive a well-educated Christian of the fourteenth century. The man would prove to be a total ignoramus, except on matters of faith. His beliefs about geography, astronomy and medicine would embarrass even a child, but he would know more or less everything there is to know about God."
If you are looking for something to challenge your mind, and take a deep dive into the issues we face as a planet if we are to get past our present internecine warfare, you could do a lot worse than read this.
Agree, or disagree, but Sam Harris provides a lot of food for thought.

read: the big necessities

Anyone who has stepped foot in rural India, Africa, South America or frankly much of the world outside of Europe and North America is more than aware that sanitation is a major issue. But most people have no clue just how important it is to improving man's lot on this planet. People give freely to water projects. But fail to remember that without proper sanitation they are just helping the locals drink more contaminated water, more easily.
"Cholera and Typhoid kill so many millions of kids a year, which amounts to two jumbo jets full of children every four minutes."
Have a read of this rock-around-the world treatise on human waste. And ponder how much better the world would be, in so many ways, if some version of
Thomas Crapper's life saving technology could be installed for all mankind.

cocktail: the last word

Once you've finished reading, and digesting, the above, you'll be well placed to hold court by having the last word.
So lets just do that.
Equal parts gin, chartreuse, maraschino liqueur, and fresh lime juice, this is an old-fashioned cocktail that feels awfully modern. Its equally-portioned ingredients make for easy scaling: mix up a triple or quadruple batch to serve several drinkers at once.
INGREDIENTS:
3⁄4 oz. gin
3⁄4 oz. green Chartreuse
3⁄4 oz. maraschino liqueur, like Luxardo
3⁄4 oz. fresh lime juice
Twist of lime for garnish
DIRECTIONS:
Vigorously shake all ingredients together with ice. Strain into a martini glass or a coupe and garnish with lime twist.
Bottoms Up!
