Quinn + Tonik Vol. 48: Buttons, Badges, and Belonging

Quinn + Tonik Vol. 48: Buttons, Badges, and Belonging

The Queen's Royal Lancers. The "Death or Glory Boys".

A regiment in the British cavalry tracing its roots to 1715. Many decorated with another badge, the Victoria Cross - the highest honor a military man may attain in the British Army.

Ironically, also a Punk Rock anthem. By The Clash.

Death. Or. Glory.

Ponder those words for a minute. And then consider under what circumstances you may find your lymbic system answering the call. And able to affix a piece of metal declaring your membership of the club. We all have to declare our allegiances at some point when the call comes. Which is why our Smoking Skull cufflinks and other silver and metal items are cast, enameled and polished by the same artisans in England who have been preparing the "Death or Glory Boys" and others since 1685.

You may need a stiff drink to do so. In which case, read from the bottom up, pour yourself a cocktail, and prepare to join the wolves.

read: the four feathers

Good enough to have been made into a film no less than four times (this one is our favourite), this may not be a story of, "Death or Glory." But comes close enough.

After Harry Feversham quits his regiment on the eve of their leaving on campaign in Egypt, he recieves four feathers, and loses everything he holds dear.

Little do his critics realize the lengths to which he will go to reclaim both his standing, and his friends.

coming soon: smoking skull buttons

Buttons were once used not only to mark one's allegiances. But also as currency. As we can make you yours from almost anything you'd care to mention it's not stretching the truth to say that a duncan quinn suit or blazer may well be worth more in the future than it is today.

Perhaps your grandson can trade in a blazer for an education. Or a trip to mars. But whatever he chooses to do with it, its components and construction will pass the test of time.

As we've often said, if you can dream it, we can make it. So don't hesitate to ask.

After all, this is all for Wolves, Not Sheep.

get involved: elephant charge

This is about a pilgrimage to save the elephants...

DQ has been visiting Zambia for some 30 years or so, with deep local connections.

In 2012 he started entering a team to compete in an annual 4x4 car rally which takes place in the Zambian bush outside Lusaka, and sponsoring the committee and team shirts. The Elephant Charge raises money and awareness for conservation and elephants in Zambia.

This year team Quinn + Tonik is shipping its modified Land Rover D90 to Walvis Bay in Namibia and then driving across the Kalahari Desert to Lusaka, Zambia to compete in the rally. Quite the adventure of many a Gentleman Rogue's dreams. All while raising sponsors and donors for the cause.

As with most teams, we are raising funds to offset some of the considerable expenses to do this via product and branding placements. And raising direct donations on top of that.

We will be picking up the car in Walvis Bay, Namibia around September 20th and driving across Namibia into Zambia to compete in the rally September 29th weekend.

We are actively seeking corporate sponsors for the team. And also hoping our Quinn + Tonik readers will want to donate to the cause directly!

watch: the first great train robbery

The gentlemen among you may prefer to return to their four feathers. But the rogues will appreciate a romp through Victorian London of another flavor as Connery and Sutherland figure out The First Great Train Robbery. All in order to accrue a few more buttons.

Enjoy.

“the direct route isn’t always the best one” We've had a lot of time to think about this as we've just driven across Africa in a car that averages 50mph on a good day. 14 hours of trundling along through the middle of nowhere gives time for reflection. Time to think about how lucky [...]
