Champagne Century

There are exactly four bottles of unbelievably precious Krug 1915 left in the entire world.

With the will to write a sizable check and some pretty snappy work with a paddle the chance to pop one of them open could be yours. On Sept. 25 in New York, Sotheby’s is staging its Finest and Rarest Wines sale, featuring an astounding collection of the very finest Old and New World vintages plus a once-in-a-lifetime, two-day Krug tasting and culinary experience. In addition to sampling the century-old bottle of 1915, the eye-popping lot includes a private tasting with House of Krug scion Olivier Krug covering the full hundred years of its history at the maison’s storied cellars in Reims for four guests. Bidding will begin at $15,000, and could go easily into six figures.

The experience starts with a tour of Krug’s legendary vineyards. The tasting begins that afternoon with five different vintages of the house’s legendary champagnes from Clos du Mesnil – merely a warmup for an epic dinner at Reim’s L’Assiette Champenoise, where famed three Michelin-star chef Arnaud Lallement will present a tasting menu called “Journey in the Krug Universe”. Day two begins at the maison’s legendary cellars. Olivier Krug will present the bottle of 1915, the start of a vertical tasting in the cellar itself. The guests, Olivier Krug, two members of Krug’s official tasting committee and Sotheby’s doyenne of wine Serena Sutcliffe will share their impressions, which will then be registered as the “official tasting notes of Krug Private Cuvée 1915”. If you plan to be among the chosen, let us make you some suitable attire. You wouldn’t want to be undressed for making history…

Words by: JPS for duncan quinn There’s something dark going on in Scotland. Dark and delicious that is. We’re talking two new single malts from Islay, of course, land of the smokiest whiskies in the world, courtesy of two of our favorite distilleries. The first, Ardbeg, was established in 1815 on an especially craggy bit […]
