The Heuer Seafarer

The Heuer Seafarer

Words by: JPS for Duncan Quinn

Those in the know about American heritage brands are well aware that long before

there first mall was built in America Abercrombie & Fitch was once the epitome of classic sportswear and accessories for the discerning gentleman. And even well into the 1970s it retained some of that savoir vivre. The best evidence of that survives today in the form of the rare Seafarer chronographs made specially for A&F by legendary watch brand Heuer in the Sixties and Seventies. And one of the lust-worthy pieces is coming up for auction at Bonhams Watches and Wristwatches Including the Collection of a European Nobleman sale in London on Sept. 13.

There are a couple different versions of the Seafarer that were produced by Heuer over the years for A&F but the one being offered by Bonhams is among the rarest, last made, and most beautiful. At 40mm it doesnt suffer from the small watch syndrome that plagues some vintage specimens. The slate gray dial is especially dashing with its blue and white subdials, and, to our eyes, more elegant than the earlier white dialed version. Heuer of course is best known for motorsports inspired watches like the Carrera and Autavia, some of which were also retailed by A&F back in the day though not with signed dials. The Seafarer is estimated at up to $6,000 but worth considerably more. Which means, of course, that there is no reason not to buy it.
