Baselworld Beauty: TAG Brings Back the Heuer Monza

Baselworld Beauty: TAG Brings Back the Heuer Monza

Words by: JPS for Duncan Quinn

There were two things that really caught our eye at Baselworld,

the annual Swiss watch expo where the industrys leading lights show off what everyone will be wearing on their wrists in the year to come. Not coincidentally, they were both throwbacks to an earlier era of stylish timekeeping, when watches were still fairly affordable and more about performing an actual function than flashing cash. In this case as tools to improve your racing skills the Rolex Daytona and Heuer Monza. Check out our Instagram feed @duncan_quinn for our thoughts on the Daytona, which now sports an old-school black ceramic bezel. Its like getting a Paul Newman model for a tenth of the price.

The Monza is a reissue in celebration of the models 40th anniversary. In 1976, Jack Heuer, the great-grandson of the brand’s founder, designed a chronograph to celebrate Niki Lauda’s first world championship title with Ferrari. The Swiss watch company was then Official Timekeeper for Scuderia Ferrari. The Monzas coussin” case was in fact inspired by a 1925 model, but the all-black chronograph equipped with a pulsometer (to measure the heart rate) and a tachymeter scale (which converts time into speed), along with red hands and counters to reflect its racing heritage was ultra-modern. As great a timepiece then as it is today, and anyone who doesn't agree needs their mince pies checked.

But of course no one really gives a […]
