Low miles, one lady owner

There’s something in the air in the south of France. Picasso knew it, Matisse knew it, and I have to say, I know it. Its been the riviera of choice for European playboys and playgirls since Roman times. And with good reason. After all, what’s not to love about temperate climes, beautiful seas, tasty food, delectable wines and even more delectable eye candy?

Of course, there’s also that very special enclave that, with the help of some piratical strategery, turned a small fishing village with a rocky beach into one of the most exclusive clubs in the world. If you’re the kind of guy who starts sweating like a rapist at the mention of Maranello you can do a lot worse than pass a sunny afternoon in Monaco. After all, when you get to keep your loot you have more to spend on toys. The historic Grand Prix de Monaco is a rather more understated and elegant affair than the Formula One version. It only runs every other year and attracts an entirely different class of people shall we say. But more of that later. As Lotus’s, BRAs, Ferraris and other raucous stuff blasted around the track on Saturday testing for the Sunday races, RM Auctions popped the champagne corks and rolled some amazing machines under the hammer at the Grimaldi Forum. I was lucky enough to be invited along for a glass or three and to ponder what I would write a check for should the mood take me.From bubble cars to Bugattis it was a veritable smorgasbord of choice rides. And they had a car for everyone from Bond to Odd Job.After much circling, ogling and inspection, my three car garage selected from the options would have been the BMW Isetta 300 Bubble Car, the golden 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Roadster and the 1966 Ferrari 206 S Dino Spyder. After all, we all need a runabout to do the shopping, something to go out for dinner in and make an entrance, and something to take to the track to let off steam in of a weekend…

Monaco: 5*/5… Paradise for Pirates
BMW Isetta 300:4*/5… Baked Bean Special
Rolls Royce Phantom II: 5*/5… Golden Goddess
Ferrari Dino 206 S Spyder: 5*/5…
the prettiest prancing horse by far
